Line-Up Builder

This Google spreadsheet allows you to quickly set a line-up and have it automatically fill in fielding rotation. Thank you to Chad Capra for creating and sharing this, it's a great tool if you are interested in using!

Here is how it works:

  1. Type in your batting order using "Line-up Builder" tab
  2. Print Line-up using "Today's Line-up" tab

Adjustments throughout season (and absences):

  • Continue fielding rotation from previous week (allows everyone to play every position)
    • Change "1st Batter's Starting Position #" appropriately to select the "correct" position for inning 1 of the new game (e.g. 7 if the order will remain the same).  The rest of the fielding rotation adjusts appropriately.
  • Absent/Out
    • Only type in players who are playing into the line-up creator (leave blanks at bottom) and "Today's Line-up" will be adjusted appropriately
  • Late Absences/Out (without notice... after you have already printed a line-up...ugh)
    • Print extra blank line-ups for 8,9,10,11 players by using "--" in the name field and you can keep these in your bag so you can just hand write your line-up when you get to the field.
    • This really helps prevent trying to figure it out, on the fly, when their are so many other things to worry about during a game

Optional (changing batting order vs not)

  • Changing batting order each week (e.g. starting with the next player after the last out of the previous game)
    • Just change the order of the line up so your first batter of the week is at the top
  • Leave batting order as-is throughout the season so that players follow the same person in the field as well as throughout the season batting (see "default position order" below)
    • You will just need to tell players where the line-up starts for the given week (vs it always starting at the top of the position order, print out)

Default Position Order (aka Fielding Rotation)

  • Players at top of order are always followed by the next person at the bottom of the order (for fielding)... meaning Batter #1 playing SS would have Batter #12 playing LC behind them and Batter #12 would become SS the next inning.
  • I chose the following (default) ordering (LC -> SS -> P -> RC -> 2B -> ...) so that players would be backing up (and observing) the position they would play next.

Changing Position Order (meaning the "path" players follow as they rotate positions each inning)

  • Choose a different order for field rotation
    • Type in position order (top to bottom) in the 12 player, 11 player, etc "Position Order" grid
